When Donald Trump entered office in 2017, the annual budget for ICE was well under $10 billion. Today, it is nearly ten times that, making ICE the highest-funded federal law enforcement agency in US history.
Trump has channeled tens of billions of taxpayer dollars to ICE in order to carry out ethnic cleansing and as a means to enrich his cronies in the violence industry. But above all, he is funded ICE so much because he needs loyal shock troops to impose autocratic rule.
If ICE succeeds in deporting the millions of undocumented people in the United States, they will move on to other targets. If they have not done so already, it is only because people are fighting so hard to protect immigrants. This drives home the meaning of solidarity: the best way to protect ourselves tomorrow is to protect each other today.
Until January 26, 2026, the Trump administration’s position was that ICE had the right to extrajudicially murder anyone they chose. Administration officials spread vile falsehoods about Renee Good and Alex Pretti, even though video footage of their murders was publicly available. This is a regime that kidnaps, murders, and lies as standard policy.
But the people of Minnesota refused to back down. By fighting back on a daily basis, they made it impossible for ICE to achieve their goals in the Twin Cities. If they had not, ICE would be repeating the assault on the Twin Cities all around the country. Never forget that it was decentralized, autonomous, grassroots direct action that achieved this victory—not politicians, parties, or petitioning.
Any politician, organization, or activist who calls for people to restrain themselves in the face of fascism creates the conditions for more kidnapping and murder. Likewise, those who simply want to “reform” ICE are normalizing a fascist gestapo. Every agent who joined or remained in ICE under Trump did so with the intention of abducting and terrorizing people. Even if the Trump regime has been temporarily forced to slow down, their goal is full totalitarianism.
ICE has only existed for 23 years. There is no reason it should exist at all. Stop the mercenaries wherever they strike. Stand up for each other. Abolish ICE.
